Definition

-  Acute viral or bacterial infection of larger airways in absence of chronic lung disease

 

Features

-  Chronic bronchitis considred component of COPD

 

Causes

-  Viral

-  Influenza

-  Bacterial

-  Pertusis

-  Mycoplasma 

 

Associated S/S

-  Acute cough (<3/52)

-  Persistant cough consider Mycoplasma

-  Persistant + paroxysmal: Pertusis

 

Complications

-  Chronic cough: consider Mycoplasma

-  Pneumonia

 

Ix

-  +/- CXR

 

Mx

-  Immunisations

-  Abx provide marginal benefit (reduce natural Hx by 1 day+/-)

-  Pertusis only indication for Abx

-  Bronchodilators if wheeze present

-  Salbutamol

-  Neuraminidase inhibitors if Influenza

-  Within 48hrs of onset
