Definition

-  Ankle injury resulting in dislocation of akle joint

 

Features

-  Rarely seen without fracture

-  May disloate: posterior, anterior, lateral or superior

-  Posterior

-   Most common

-   Talus moves posteriorly

-  Anterior

-  Lateral

-  Superior

 

Causes

-  Mechanism usually plantar flexion + inversion or eversion

 

Associated S/S

-  +/- fracture

 

Complications

-  Ankle joint instability

-  Neurovascular damage

 

Ix

-  Ankle exam

-  Ankle X-ray

 

Mx

-  Analgesia

-  Reduction of joint

-  +/- Procedural sedation

-  Grasp toes of effected ankle & allow gravity to relocate joint

-  Cast: U slab, maintain 90o foot position + mild varus deformity
