Definition

-  Basic salts which neutralise stomach acidity

 

Mechanism

-  Raise stomach pH by buffering gastric aid (HCl)

-  Calcium carbonate

-  Sodium bicarbonate

-  Magnesium carbonate

-  Aluminium hydroxide

Indications

-  GORD

-  PUD

 

Side Effect/Precautions

-  Hypercalcaemia

-  Milk-Alkali syndrome

-  Alkalosis

-  Constipation (Calcium or Aluminium)

-  Diarrhoea (Magnesium salts)

-  Chelation of drugs esp Tetracyclines

-  Decreased acidity --> altered absorption of Digoxin, Ketoconazole
