-  Most common group of psychiatric disorders

-  Pathological anxiety: tension, worry, dread or arousal which is excessive or prolonged & unrelated to obvious threat or is disproportionate & causes impaired function

-  Fear is the prominent emotion but others may be evident (guilt, shame..)

-  Females 2:1 males

-  Aus. 1 yr prevelance 10%

-  Often misDx & underrecognised

-  Often leads to depression, substance abuse & increased suicide



-  Panic Disorder

-  with Agoraphobia (PDA)

-  without Agoraphobia (PD)

-  Agoraphobia without Panic Disorder

-  Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

-  Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

-  Specific Phobias

-  Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

-  Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)



-  Panic Disorder: spontaneous or cued, fear of having an attack with or without phobic avoidance (agoraphobia)

-  GAD: pathological worry with tension

-  SAD: fear of scrutiny & social embarrassment

-  Hyperthyroidism: TSH
