Features

- Typically performed on anteroposteior spine & hip

- Performed 2 yrs after commencing medications for osteoporosis

 

PBS Criteria

- Low trauma fracture

- Steroid therapy >7.5mg for >3 months

- Hypogonadism

- Cushings syndrome

- Hyperthyroidism

- Hyperpararthyroidism

- Chronic renal disease

- Chronic liver disease

- >70yrs old

 

DEXA

 

T Score

-  Compares BMD to normal young (30 yrs) person of same sex

-  -1 --> -2.5 Standard Deviations (SD) from normal: osteopaenia

-  > -2.5 SD from normal: osteoporosis

 

Z Score

-  Compares BMD to normal person of same sex, age, weight and race
