Definition

-  Serum protein tumour marker

 

Rationale

- Primarily used to monitor Mx of ovarian cancer

- Screening to detect ovarian cancer reoccurrence

- May be used to assess high risk women for ovarian cancer esp if BRCA1 or 2 +ve

- Not used as a screening test: Low spec

 

Test

- Monoclonal antibody to CA125 protein

 

Procedure

- Venepuncture

- Thoracentesis (pleural fluid)

- Parecentesis (peritoneal fluid)

 

Results

- N < 35 U/ml

- > 35 U/ml

-Ovarian cancer

-Pregnancy

-Endometriosis

-PID

-Normal menstruation

-Diverticulitis
