Definition

-  Fracture of calcaneus bone in foot

-  Intra or extra-articular

-  Posterior facet often involved

Mechanism

-  Usually results from fall from height

 

Associated S/S

-  Ankle swelling

-  Must examine contralateral foot for fracture

 

Complications

-  Compartment syndrome of foot

-  25% associated w vertebral compression fracture

-  Open fracture

 

Ix

-  Ankle exam

-  Neurovascular assessment: compartment syndrome

-  X-ray foot

-  +/- bilaterally

-  +/- trauma series

-  +/- CT Foot

-  Degree of comminution of posterior facet

-  Intra-articular extension

-  Entrapment of tendons or nerves laterally btwn lat. malleolus & lat. border calcaneus

 

Mx

-  Analgesia

-  Cast: Back slab

-  Strict bed rest w elevation until swelling subsided

-  Non-weight bearing 6 weeks+

-  +/- ORIF
