Definition

-  Oral anti-hyperthyroid agent

 

Features

-  Crosses the placenta

 

Mechanism

-  Reduces production of of thyroid hormones T3 & T4

- Prevents thyroid peroxidase from iodinating tyrosine on thyroglobulin

 

Side Effects

-  Nausea

- Headache

- Skin rash, pruritus, urticaria: may treat with antihistamines

- Hair loss

- Arthralgia or myalgia

- Agranulocytosis: sore throat, fever

 

Indication

-  Hyperthyroidism

-  Graves disease

 

Dose

-  Typical starting dose 15-40mg until euthyroid

- Then 5-15mg daily as maintenance
