Definition

-  Oral medication to assist in smoking cessation

 

Features

-  Requires F/U 2-3/52 for progress, side effects & support

-  Covered by PBS for 12 week course per year

- Initiation Pack = weeks 1-4 (0.5mg & 1mg tablets)

- Contiuation Pack = weeks 5-12 (1mg tablets)

- Completion Supply = weeks 13-24 (used if needed for extra support)

 

Mechanism

-  Reduced cravings

- Decreases pleasure & satisfaction from smoking

 

Indications

-  Smoking cessation

 

Dose

-  0.5mg PO Daily 3/7

-  Then 0.5mg BD 4/7

-  Then 1mg Daily 11/52 (12/52 total): should cease smoking in this week

 

Champix

 

Precautions

-  Not recommended if psychiatric Hx

 

Side Effects

-  Behavioursal changes: depression, anxiety, agitation, aggression, thoughts of self harm, hallucinations

- Effects of nicotine withdrawal

- Nausea, constipation, vomiting

- Headache, dizziness, unusual dreams

- Increased appetite, taste changes
