Definition

- Characteristic facial twitch elicited by tapping facial nerve

 

Features

-  Facial nerve tapped at angle of jaw

-  Contraction of facial muscles: nose, lips, etc.

-  Thumb in opposition

-  Not sensitive or specific for hypocalcaemia

-  Absent in around 2 thirds of patients with hypocalcaemia

-  Present in around 10% patient with normal calcium levels

 

Causes

-  Hypocalcaemia

- Respiratory Alkalosis
