Rationale

-  Minor operation performed when

-  Pap Smear is abnormal but colposcopy is normal

-  Pap Smear or biopsy shows abnormal glandular cell

-  Used to detect cancer of the cervix or pre-cancerous changes

 

Features

-  Minor operation to remove cone shaped piece of cervix

-  May be diagnostic & curative of cervical cancer

-  May be performed during colposcopy

-  LA (or GA)

-  Vaginal speculum

-  Scalpel

Complications

-  Cervix may be weakened after cone biopsy & cause problems during pregnancy (cervical incompetence)
