Definition

-  Childhood functional gastrointestinal disorder caused by poor co-ordination of pelvic floor relaxation with increased abdominal pressure resulting in discomfort when defecating

-  Definition = 10min+ straining & crying prior to successful passage of soft stools in otherwise healthy infant <6 months old

 

Features

-  Often present within 2-3 months w constipation

 

Associated S/S

-  Crying, red in face &/or screaming prior to defecating

-  Several times per day

-  Otherwise healthy infant

-  Stools are soft, nil blood

-  Soft abdomen

-  Anxious parents

 

DDx

-  Constipation: stool is soft, nil blood

 

Ix

-  +/- New born exam

-  Abdominal exam: should be normal

-  Anus patency

-  Growth & development: should be normal

 

Mx

-  Reassurance

-  Do NOT use digital stimulation or suppositories

-  Usually only lasts 2 weeks+/-

-  Resolves spontaneously
