Definition

-  Injury to the meniscus of the knee joint

 

Features

-  Medial meniscus more commonly injured

-  Attaches to deep fibers of the medial collateral ligament

 

Cause

-  Compression of knee joint with rotation

 

Associated S/S

-  Pain

-  Mild antalgia but usually able to continue activity

-  Sudden twinge or pain over joint line

-  +/- clicking, catching or locking

-  Knee examination

-  Swelling, erythema, warmth

-  Stiff joint with effusion

-  Joint line tenderness: 85% sensitivity, 29% specific

-  McMurray Test: 29% sensitivity, 95% specific

-  Apleys Grind Test

-  MRI

-  Out-of-pocket if referred by LMO but may expediate referral & reduce overall costs

 

Mx

-  Analgesia

-  RICE

-  Referral to Ortho

-  +/- MRI prior

-  May consider conservative Mx over 4 weeks if small & asymptomatic

-  Surgery: arthroscopy
