-  Class of antidepressant

-  Selective for Serratonin (5HT)

-  New class = SNRIs (Serratonin Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors)

 

Medications

-  Sertraline (Zoloft)

-  Citalopram (Cipramil)

-  Fluoxetine (Prozac)

-  Fluvoxamine (Luvox)

-  Paroxetine (Aropax)

 

Uses

-  1st Line: Panic disorder, GAD, SAD

-  Suitable 1st line for major depression (non-melancholic) esp in children

 

Side Effects

-  Nausea, nervousness, agitation, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, insomnia, decreased libido, anorgansmia, ejaculatory disturbance, SIADH (esp elderly)

-  Increased risk of bleeding esp if w NSAIDS

-  Do not combine w MAOIs --> serratonin syndrome

-  Not recommended <18 yrs ? increased suicide risk
