Clinical Relevance

-  Erbs palsy

-  Supraspinatus tendonitis/calcification

-  Supraspinatus tear

 

Features

-  Member of rotator cuff group of muscles

-  Posterior group of shoulder joint muscles

-  Round, conical shaped muscle

-  Lies deep to trapezius muscle in supraspinous fossa of scapula

-  Lies deep to deltoid muscle at humeral head

-  Passes laterally from suprascapular fossa deep to coracoacromial arch

-  If deltoid paralysed supraspinatus can partially abduct humerus

 

Origin

-  Supraspinous fossa of scapula

 

Insertion

-  Superior facet of greater tubercule of humerus

 

Action

-  Abducts humerus

-  Stabilises humeral head in glenohumeral joint

 

Innervation

-  Suprascapular nerve (C4, C5, C6)
